Metering and Detection
We can help you in several critical areas including: N/C meter, Radar equipment, and Safurex® high-pressure equipment. N/C meter: The molar ratio between ammonia and carbon dioxide in the urea synthesis reactor, commonly referred to as N/C ratio, is the main process parameter to achieve the optimal yield of urea. If the N/C ratio is correct, the plant produces at stable conditions with the maximum temperature at prevailing synthesis pressure maximizing urea yield. The result is less steam consumption, minimum ammonia losses, no laboratory assistance required and maximum urea production.
Stamicarbon has a continuous N/C measurement system that can be used in its own design urea plants, as well as in many other urea plants. This is based on measuring density of the urea synthesis reactor effluent, which demonstrates a relationship with the N/C ratio. Hence, by continuously sampling the effluent and translating the density measurement into the N/C ratio, this provides a continuous flow of information on one of the urea plant’s key operating parameters.
To realize an accurate measurement, the sample needs to be conditioned at a reduced temperature and pressure. The sample taken from the urea synthesis reactor first passes a sample conditioning system (cooling, pressure reducing and flushing). The sample is then analyzed in the density meter, before being released into the recirculation section.
Ultimately, for than two decades, the N/C meter has proved very reliable, saving money, time and hassle.
The N/C measurement system, installed in a cabinet, is built by SPIE, a partnering company of Stamicarbon. The cabinet has all the connections required for easy installation in a urea plant. The N/C measurement system can be installed in all Stamicarbon urea plants and many non-Stamicarbon urea plants.
Leak detection systems: A reliable leak detection system is very important for the safe performance of a urea plant.
All high-pressure equipment items consist of a carbon steel pressure wall with a corrosion resistant layer. It’s well known that carbamate solutions in contact with carbon steel will cause corrosion at rates of more than 900 mm per year; and for that reason a corrosion resistant layer is installed to protect this carbon steel. A leak detection system effectively monitors the gap between the liner and the pressure vessel wall – a job of the utmost importance.
Different systems are installed in urea plants, and different licensors have equally different philosophies about leak detection. Stamicarbon has analyzed most of these leak detection systems and concluded that certain philosophies are not correct and only lead to more expensive equipment without even contributing to the equipment reliability.
Stamicarbon favours an online, continuous monitoring system with a short response time, with two different systems available:

Radar: We have developed a new level measurement in urea plants for the HP stripper, reactor, pool reactor, and LP/MP carbamate condenser. Traditionally, pressure measurements are not accurate and lead to leakages; while radioactive systems are difficult to handle. We achieved our radar measurement technology thanks to Safurex® reinforced steel. Features of our radar level measurement are:
