    History/Heritage

Stamicarbon was founded in 1947, established its flagship urea plant 10 years later and has been at the forefront of the industry ever since…

  • 1940s:

The company sold licenses for coal washing plants, eventually specializing in fertilizers and, eventually, urea.

  • 1950s:

Stamicarbon commissioned its flagship urea plant in Geleen, the Netherlands. Production capacity was 150 tonnes per day. The following year, Stamicarbon sold its first urea license to the Société Carbochimique in Tertre, Belgium.

  • 1960s:

Stamicarbon grants its first caprolactam license in Russia in 1964. Followed in 1965 by the first license of the famous Stamicarbon Urea CO2 stripping plant.

  • 1970s:

The Plant Management Consultancy (PMC) concept is introduced, covering every aspect of urea production, including learning and development. The first computer-based simulations for urea production are also produced.

  • 1980s:

High and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LLDPE) licensing is introduced. Meanwhile, as the market for mixed fertilizers becomes saturated Stamicarbon sells its licensing business to Deutsche Engineering. The licensing of Urea, however was not sold and brought to a very high level.

  • 1990s:

The Urea 2000Plus™ pool condenser and pool reactor technology is launched, along Safurex® steel and Stamicarbon fluid-bed granulation technology.

  • 2000s:

The Mega Plant concept is introduced for production capacities up to 6000 mtpd; while the Avancore® process combines the advantages of Urea 2000Plus™, Safurex®, low plant height, and lower total cost of ownership.

  • 2009:

Acquisition of Stamicarbon by Maire Tecnimont - the parent company of an engineering, main contracting and licensing group that operates worldwide in the oil, gas & petrochemicals, power, infrastructure and civil engineering sectors.

  • 2010:

Acquisition of Noy by Stamicarbon. Noy Engineering has a 30 year-plus track record in global engineering, innovation excellence and market know-how in polymerization technologies across five continents.

  • Avancore licensed for the first time.
