The pool condenser design is based on ammonia and carbon dioxide being condensed to form carbamate in a pool of liquid - where at the same time a substantial part of the conversion to urea takes place.
This principle not only decreases the tube area needed for condensation but also reduces the additional reactor volume otherwise needed for the conversion of carbamate to urea. The heat released by condensation and subsequent formation of carbamate is used to produce re-usable low-pressure steam.
