| DSM is Stamicarbon's parent company.
DSM’s Corporate Research Centre started the development
of the urea process in the second half of the 1940s.
DSM’s first commercial urea plant was designed by Stamicarbon
and based on DSM in-house research and development. It came
on stream in 1956. A major aspect of this plant was the use
of oxygen as a passivating agent, for which DSM secured
patents. This feature has enabled Stamicarbon to use normal
stainless steels as construction material for the urea synthesis.
In urea production, the correct choice and application of
construction materials is essential because of the corrosive
nature of solutions of ammonium carbamate, which is an intermediate
product in the urea process.
Optimized process conditions, resulting in lower temperatures,
together with extensive research efforts carried out in cooperation
with steel manufacturers and suppliers of welding electrodes
has enabled Stamicarbon to specify plant construction materials
which have an optimal corrosion resistance.
A clear understanding of the ammonia/carbon dioxide/ urea/
water phase equilibria was achieved by carrying out extensive
fundamental research into urea technology. This paved the
way for the successive Stamicarbon developments of revolutionary
urea processes, such as: the traditional CO2 stripping
process, Urea 2000plus™ with pool condenser or pool
reactor and the MEGA plant concept.
Austenetic stainless steel 25 22 2 and recently, the new construction
material of choice Safurex® are developments
made by Stamicarbon in cooperation with Sandvik.
During the late seventies and early eighties DSM/Stamicarbon
developed and tested a new fluidized bed granulation
process for urea. This process is currently commercially
available for licensing.
Stamicarbon employs highly qualified professionals who perform
the licensing of urea and all related services world wide.
Stamicarbon’s technologies are continuously updated
and further developed in close cooperation with DSM’s
operating companies, in particular DSM Melamine (owner of
a state-of-the-art Urea 2000™ Plus Poolreactor plant
in Geleen, The Netherlands) and DSM Research.
Innovation is the key to the future, both for our customers
and ourselves.
Continuous improvement efforts ensure leading edge technology
for our clients.
