The Challenge

To ensure the safety and reliability of your refrigerated ammonia storage tank, regular inspections are a must. Regular inspections also include internal inspections, which pose a significant challenge to many plant owners due to a lack of experience with decommissioning and re-commissioning of such storage tanks and the associated risks.

Stamicarbon strongly advises opening the tank for internal inspection at the latest 20 years after commissioning or previous inspection.

Therefore, we offer a comprehensive Ammonia Tank inspection service based on years of experience and expertise in materials and corrosion. The solution also includes full service and support for safe and efficient decommissioning and re-commissioning of the refrigerated ammonia storage tank and inspection of the connecting ammonia piping system.

Our Solution

Stamicarbon uses the approach of Fertilizers Europe (formerly EFMA) to develop the inspection strategy. First, we perform a Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) study to assess the criticality of the tank, and based on the findings, determine the timing and the scope of internal and external inspections.

The RBI study considers:

  • Tank design and materials, piping isometrics
  • Fabrication methods (welding, PWHT, etc.)
  • NDE reports during the construction phase
  • Commissioning procedure and report
  • Maintenance and inspection history
  • Process upsets / water supply / oxygen ingress

Based on the RBI assessment, Stamicarbon advises if and when an internal inspection needs to be done. In some cases, depending on the design of your tank, the internal inspection can be postponed by additional fracture mechanical assessment and/or performing a non-intrusive external inspection. Lastly, we check if the outcome is compliant with National Authority standards. If the internal inspection cannot be postponed, specific knowledge of decommissioning and re-commissioning of the storage tank is required.

  • On-site supervision during de- and re-commissioning
  • On-site supervision during inspection and repairs
  • Issuing a final report including tank and piping criticality assessment and the scope and timing of future inspections

Advantages

Stamicarbon’s ammonia tank inspections offer the following advantages:

  • A one-stop-shop solution for criticality assessment of your tank and connecting ammonia piping system, inspections and repairs: from site mobilization to de- and re-commissioning to final handover
  • If possible and required, we offer more time-efficient and cost-effective inspections by using “rope access” instead of scaffolding

Planning

Stamicarbon offers a full-scope solution to assess the integrity of your refrigerated ammonia storage tank, which includes the required services of other parties.

Alternatively, you can order the inspection activities in separate phases if needed.

The whole project can take as little as eight weeks to complete if all prerequisites are available and all activities take place smoothly. Therefore, careful planning and scheduling are required for such internal inspection.

Our ammonia tank inspections are based on over 30 years of experience within this area of expertise. We follow the Guidance for Inspection of Atmospheric, Refrigerated Ammonia Storage Tanks of Fertilizer Europe, but other approaches can be discussed upon request.
