The answer to a more sustainable future

The challenge

The world is demanding accelerated cooperative climate action to reduce emissions. Solutions for this can no longer be seen as something of the future. It is something we need now.

The EU has already set targets to reach net-zero emission by 2050 with the Paris Agreement. We need realistic, cost-effective solutions to tackle the global carbon challenge, plus methods for making energy storage green, effective and affordable. To tackle the global carbon challenge in a cost-effective manner...

The solution

We believe that Stami Green Ammonia Technology can play a role in helping overcome this challenge and here’s why…

Making the food value chain more sustainable

80% of global ammonia is used as a raw material for nitrogen fertilizer production. Roughly 180 million metric tons of ammonia were produced in 2019 to meet the demand. Ammonia plays a vital role in food production, yet ammonia production causes 1% of the total global GHG emissions. This is mostly because traditional ammonia production uses fossil fuels (like coal or natural gas) as feedstock.

But...what if we could develop ammonia without fossil fuels? What if we could make ammonia green using just sun, air and water?

Our new Stami Green Ammonia Technology plots a clear course towards green fertilizer production from nature’s elements – solar, wind energy, hydrogen from water– instead of fossil fuels - and nitrogen from the air.

It, therefore, represents a significant leap forward for sustainability within the fertilizer industry, while also offering exciting opportunities for collaboration between the fertilizer and energy markets.

Green ammonia production

Ammonia can be made green by eliminating the use of fossil fuels. How? By using water electrolysis to make hydrogen and obtaining nitrogen from the air.

The temperature and pressure needed for the hydrogen-nitrogen reaction during the ammonia synthesis loop will be powered using sustainable energy, such as wind or solar energy.

The output is carbon-free ammonia, also known as Green Ammonia; the primary feedstock for green fertilizers.

Green ammonia as a renewable feedstock for fertilizer plants…

Ammonia is the main building block for all nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen is a primary nutrient for plants and plays a vital role in food production and feeding the fast-growing population. Green ammonia can be used as a renewable feedstock for fertilizer plants to produce nitrogen fertilizers.

Stami Green Ammonia technology

Stamicarbon has entered the green ammonia market with the “Stami Green Ammonia technology”. This package contains the technology license and engineering requirements to build small-scale green ammonia plants. Our proven technology can also be applied in existing plants, as part of a hybrid technology solution to make existing fertilizer production more sustainable. Producers can choose, for example, to use this technology in combination with urea production based on carbon recycling, or in combination with nitrate fertilizers. On top of this, we can assist with financing, project development and feasibility studies.

In other words: a one-stop shop for small-scale green ammonia plants!
