Stamicarbon Process Monitor achieves strongest security rating

The NX STAMI™ Digital Process Monitor has aced its annual penetration test, achieving the strongest security rating with the lowest possible risk profile.

An independent technology consultant rigorously tested the Process Monitor for any vulnerabilities that could compromise data security, checking everything from authentication and authorization, to data encryption, validation and error handling. No vulnerabilities were found.

“Given the current attack trends and the newest assessments conducted by the offensive security team, we assess that the target is currently exposed to a remote risk of compromise,” concluded the technology consultant in its Penetration Test Report, delivered in February 2025.

The remote risk profile represents the lowest possible risk on the scale: Remote, Low, Medium, High, Critical.

“This achievement reflects Stamicarbon’s continuous development efforts to ensure our Process Monitor is a powerful and trusted tool for optimizing the performance of urea plants. We perform checks after even the smallest changes to ensure the security of the tool, our technology and our customers’ data,” said Nick van Ast, Stamicarbon’s Software Development Manager.

About the NX STAMI™ Digital Process Monitor

The Process Monitor is a tailor-made, steady-state process plant model (digital twin) running in parallel to the real plant. It uses Stamicarbon’s unique thermodynamics and kinetics models to provide real-time and continuous insights into equipment and instrument performance.

The model produces Key Performance Indicators and soft-sensor information using real-time distributed control system (DCS) data and a first principles-based process model fitted to your historical plant operation. These KPIs and soft sensors include key variables critical for understanding the actual performance of the plant, such as the N/C ratio, reactor yield, etc. shown on dashboards as part of the Process Monitor application.

What is a penetration test?

Penetration testing (pen testing) is a proactive cybersecurity investigation that simulates real-world cyberattacks on networks, applications, and IT infrastructure. The goal is to identify vulnerabilities before cybercriminals exploit them, allowing organizations to strengthen their security defenses. It takes into account two key aspects of a cyber-attack: the probability of occurrence of a malicious event, and the potential impact that could persist on the organization, which may affect its reputation, compliance, or service delivery. The test conducted on the NX STAMI™ Digital Process Monitor followed the globally recognized OWASP methodology and standards. https://owasp.org/
